When people think of image consultants or a personal stylist, they think of the rich and/or famous. What many do not know or understand is that you do not have to be wealthy to afford or benefit from using image consultants.

So why would you need a personal stylist? Well there are many reasons. Some people absolutely loathe shopping. They hate going store to store, they hate the time it takes choose what article of clothing or outfit looks right on them or for them. Others need a boost of image, whether because of a new job, special function or a desire to look the best that they can. There are many reasons on why one could or even should use the services of image consultants.

A trained and certified personal stylist is someone who works for you. They take into count your skin tone, your height and weight, your body shape and your personality. They pull together all these factors to create an outfit or wardrobe that specifically made for you. Good image consultants are magical in how they can create looks that are not only you, but a brand new fresh version of you.

These professional are more times than not, paid on an hourly basis. How much they charge will depend on their experience, amount of clientele and the type of clientele. Yet when selecting a personal stylists there are a few things that you should look for, before you decide to hire him or her for a job. Below 10 tips that will help you in finding a good consultant.

1. Interview more than one image consulting firm or individual. If you only hire the first person you meet with, how will you know that they are the best match for the job?

2. Check for education. A true personal stylist is someone who cares about their career and will take steps to make sure that they have additional qualifications.

3. Check for experience. On the contrary, while certification is nice, it does not tell you how much working experience they have. Ideally you will want a personal stylist who has experience working in the fashion industry.

4. Look for professionalism. Do they have a website? Or did you just see a clipping at your local grocery story. Someone who cares about their work will have a professional presence and will treat their job as a career, not a mere hobby. If they have a website, how is the design, how detailed and maintained are the webpages?

5. Check customer reviews. If possible, see if you can track down any customers who have used the services of the consultant and see how satisfied they were with the overall experience.

6. Do they have integrity? Some personal stylists get kick-backs if they have their clients purchase clothing for a particular store. This is fine are they tell you up front, it’s a problem if they don’t.

7. Ask questions. Any questions or concerns you have make sure you ask during the interview phase.

8. Get answers. When the consultant is answering your questions, check to see if they are confident in their answers. Are they open, or do they seem guarded or impatient?

9. Work-ethic. Good image consultants will immediately start measuring you and taking notice of body shape and other factors that will help them build a wardrobe for you. If they are not doing this in the first interview, look elsewhere.

10. And lastly, how comfortable do you feel around the stylist? Do they care about you, your needs and desires?
