Looking for neem? Have you ever been shopping for high quality neem but could not figure out where to begin? Neem products are getting more attention these days and are being made available, but as of now are for the most part only found on the web or in small beauty shops and other out of the way places. These products are not easy to find, so it is easy to grab the first thing you stumble upon just because it says neem on it. But here are a few tips that will help you make an informed decision before you actually purchase an inferior product:
Find Out How The Oil Was Removed From The Neem Seeds There are a few different methods that are used to extract the oil from the seeds of the neem tree. As you might have already concluded, not all extraction process produce the same quality oil. The method that produces the most desirable neem seed oil is called cold pressing. Cold pressed neem oil is the best, because most active compounds remain intact. Cold pressing is also the oldest method of extraction. It uses a mechanical device that squeezes the oil from the dried seeds. Always make sure to buy only cold pressed neem oil where possible.
Steam extraction- this process uses steam and high pressure. Though this method yields more oil than cold pressing, a lot of the active compounds in the neem oil are destroyed due to the exposure to high heat.
This next extraction method is the most preferred one that most neem processors use because it gets the largest amount of oil from the seeds. It is called solvent extraction, and almost always hexane (also known as gasoline) is the solvent that is used. Though this process extracts just about all of the neem oil from the dried seeds, the solvents kill most of the active compounds in the neem seed oil. And along with this and the fact that the solvent is poisonous, it is preferable to look for items that do not contain solvent extracted neem oil.
Be Sure The Products Do Not Contain Additives Almost all cosmetics and bath/shower products these days contain chemical compounds to “enhance” them, so to speak. At the same time, some of these compounds may potentially cause adverse side effects. Two of the most common chemicals that may be in a lot of bath bath products are Lauryl Sulfates and Parabens. SLS’s are mostly used as foam producers, because they are inexpensive and work particularly well. Many inexpensive neem oil products have many of these additives too. However, these chemicals are known to have some side effects. In fact, the USFDA encourages manufacturers not to use them.
Parabens are common preservatives, and though there has been no scientific evidence that they are harmful, they are starting to be avoided by many. Some organizations feel they should be avoided in order to err on the side of safety.
Try To Find Certified Organic Ingredients For obvious reasons, organic ingredients are always more desireable than non-organic ingredients. These ingredients are all natural, and have not been exposed to man-made chemicals, fertilizers, the like. Look for labels that list only organic ingredients. If a vendor uses them, they will always state this selling point somewhere on the product.
