Summary:
The rise in flooding in the past ten years, have made lots of houses uninsurable. This article looks at the new schemes the government has arranged with insurers to permit more householders to buy home insurance. On the other hand, there will be some that still can’t aquire it.
Thousands and thousands of homeowners will still be able to take out invaluable insurance against flooding. It has been that insurers have reached a deal with the government after they committed to a long-standing flood protection accord.
Under the agreement, insurers have guaranteed to provide cover to all properties judged to have a threatof less than one in seventy five from flooding.
On condition that proposals are in position to diminish the threat to a satisfactory level within the coming 5 years, insurance companies will carry on making cover available to existing small business customers and domestic. The Environment Spokesperson said that to realise these plans the government has consigned itself to a lengthy 35 year campaign to improve flood defences.
The government proposes to improve defences and appeal to homeowners to safeguard their properties would mean that current statement of principles agreed by insurance companies could finish in 2014.
This arrangement comes over a year after floods battered areas of Hull, Gloucestershire and the Midlands. These floods caused 181,000 claims for flood-damaged homes, businesses and cars. Payouts from insurance companies came to anexorbitant 3 billion pounds.
The spokesperson told BBC Radio 4 Events programme: “The insurance companies very sensibly said that it is necessary to have a long-standing scheme – 30 years is the figure that we are proposing.
“We are studying surface water flooding, coastal flooding as well as river flooding, to ascertain that the enlarged investment that we have, is perpetual in the long term.”
Conversely, the spokesperson failed to say how many homes may fall outside the one in 75 risk group and be classed as not defendable against floods, saying just: “That isn’t for government to announce.”
He also said how essential it was that the Environment Agency makes use of its new powers to obstruct any new housing or industrial developments that may be in jeopardy from flooding. He also said that life cover companies were now primed to offer better premiums to householders who take action to make their properties resistantagainst the probability of rising flood waters
He added: “What has altered is the climate change predictions that the scientists are giving us – that the extreme weather conditions are going to escalate in the next decade.”That entails a long-term policy … It is something we have been negotiating with the insurers. They, quite justifiably, want to have assurances that homes are safeguarded and we, quite understandably, want to do that anyway.”
The Director General of the Association of British Insurers (ABI) said the agreement would ensure flood protection remained extensively available to property owners.
“This agreement is terrific news for everybody in peril of flooding,” he added. “We are elated that the government acknowledges that a long-term investment scheme, sufficiently funded, is the easiest way to manage the growing flood threat.”
The ABI had formerly cautioned that more than 500,000 homes might turn out to be uninsurable, unless the government invested more in our flood defences.
