The difference with timeshares is that they are contracted and you are really purchasing a place for a defined length of time for a specific period. For example, you may buy a timeshare in Hawaii for 3 weeks a year for a period of 25 years. In this sense, you can save money since you are buying a piece of property with other similar minded people and dividing the costs among all of you.
