With all the recent press natural E has received there has been relatively little said about the actual facts. One, d alpha tocopherol, has the greatest activity. Other compounds with vitamin E activity are, predictably, beta-tocopherol, gamma-tocopherol, and delta-tocopherol.

Vitamin E’s existence was first hinted at in 1922. Laboratory rats fed purified diets lost their reproductive ability; male rats became sterile, and female rats reabsorbed their fetuses or delivered deformed or stillborn offspring. Adding such foods as lettuce, meat, butter, or wheat to the animals’ diets, though, supplied an unknown factor that prevented these reproductive problems.

Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that protects the body’s cells from oxidation damage caused by “free radicals” that contribute to the development of health problems such as cancer and heart disease. Some researchers speculate that the aging process itself is the result of years of accumulated damage by free radicals.

Free radicals are highly reactive substances that result from normal metabolism and from exposure to environmental factors like cigarette smoke and ultraviolet light. They cause cellular damage by attacking the body’s cell membranes, proteins and DNA. Once damaged, cells can replicate its damaged DNA and this is when cancer forms from the mass replication of damaged cells.

Vitamin E is very good for repairing the connective tissue and for keeping your heart healthy. However, vitamin E mixed does not work on its own. This has been misunderstood for a long time. People think that if they just take lots of vitamin E, it might prevent tumors, for example, the fibrotic tumors that many women get in their breasts or their uterus, but if you’re not getting good balance of a lot of other nutrients, like selenium, chromium, vitamin C, and zinc, too, you’re not going to get full use of your vitamin E. All of these nutrients work together in synergy to keep the body working efficiently.

The antioxidant properties of vitamin E make it good as a natural healing nutrient. Vitamin E can neutralize free radicals in the body. By neutralizing them, vitamin E can help the body function more efficiently possibly even slowing the aging process. Some believe that free radical damage causes premature aging. Many people take vitamin E as part of their daily supplements in order to help their bodies be as healthy as possible. Vitamin E is available at your local or internet vitamin store.
