Made available in early 2009, the Sony HDR-XR100 is brimming with features complementary to the Sony HDR-CX100 such as face detection, Smile Shutter and most of all the identical lens, except for the fact that this camera is a hard-drive based machine, boasts 5.1 channels for sound and maybe, does not seem as attractive.
In spite that sporting the same lens and is robust and will sure outlive its warranty, it is a tad sad for a low-end camera bearing in mind the video quality on these two camcorders are distinct from each other. The video quality on the Sony HDR-XR100 looks to be a bit soft, even when it isn’t scaled up on a large television, and its outdoor shots certainly seem a little low on contrast with blown-out highlights.
