If in case your faucet is dripping or leaking for some time then it’s time to replace bathtub faucets.
Easy as it may seem there are a few of factors you should look in to while replacing the faucet.
Just follow the tips presented here and replacing bathtub faucets will be a simple task.
Faucets enable water through pipes to be used in controlled manner. Generally almost all bathtubs have either 2 valve or three valve faucets.
Faucets generally start leaking when their washers become corroded and stiff. Water pressure also hastens the process. In older design faucets there were neoprene or rubber washers. In most newer designs a cartridge is used in place of washers.
It is usually necessary to buy a correct faucet. Faucets come in a wide range of styles and sizes. When you have to replace a faucet it’s essential to take the right measurement of holes from centre to centre. Style is optional but size isn’t.
Also you must have the right set of tools to change a faucet. There’re various kinds of wrenches for plumbing jobs.
For hex or square nuts open end wrenches are best suited as they have smooth jaws. If your pipe is chrome coated and you don’t want to mar the surface then you may go for a strap wrench. Incase the pipe is of small diameter then you need to have vise grip wrench.
Generally 2 pipe wrenches are required for almost any plumbing jobs. One to hold and another to turn.
While installing a bathtub faucet look for the faucet assembly behind walls. Usually builders would have provided a rear access panel in the back of tub. Do take a look the instruction manual when assembling the two valve or 3 valve faucets.
And listed below are a few general sequence of tasks to replace a leaking faucet.
• First, turn off the water. You can turn off the main water supply for the entire home.
• Then remove the faucet handle. Tap or pull softly. Over time the handle might have got welded to the stem. So don’t force it. Incase it does not come out gently then use a special handle puller.
• Next remove the stem and the trim assembly. The stem assembly is used for controlling the amount and temperature of water output to the tub. Use a bath socket wrench to dis-assemble this.
• Now check the washer . Incase it is brittle or torn then the washer is the cause for the leak. Replace the stem and the washer.
• Look closely at the seats. If they are rough then they too must be replaced. Use a seat wrench to remove it.
• While replacing the various components you just need to put it all back together. Apply grease to the nut threads, washer and stem threads. Afterward put them all back together and fasten the nuts.
• Incase it’s a cartridge style faucet then take out the handle and trim. Then change the cartridge.
So with a just a little bit of know-how you may fix it by yourself for $80-$90.
In the same vein, is is not hard to fix a leaking shower faucet too.
